War, Women and Peace (WWP)

A youth-led international project on wartime violence against women and the responsibility of memory.

About the Project

War, Women and Peace is a youth-led international initiative of Hwarang International focused on how the experiences of women affected by war and conflict are documented, remembered, and carried forward by younger generations.

WWP brings together students across countries through historical research, memorial documentation, digital preservation, and international advocacy. Beginning with the history of Japanese military sexual slavery, the project has expanded its focus to examine the broader experiences of women affected by war and conflict and to consider how younger generations can help preserve these histories and make them accessible to a global audience.

The Anthology

War, Women and Peace: From Silence to Speech is the project's first published volume, compiled through the work of the WWP student team and edited by the WWP Leadership Team.

The anthology brings together student research, reflections, and memorial writing examining the experiences of women affected by war and conflict and the ways those histories continue to be remembered today. Student artwork appears alongside the written pieces, responding to the same questions in a visual form. A special section on Ukraine extends the project's focus to women living through war today, and the volume is published in English, Korean, and Ukrainian so that it can reach readers in each of these communities. A concluding CODA reflects on the responsibility of younger generations to carry these stories forward, while a photo essay documents Hwarang activities at peace memorials in Korea and abroad.
